This website is dedicated to helping you understand better the amazing world of home water purification systems! I will, as much as possible, provide you with information and tips that will help you provide safe, healthy and great-tasting water, that’s free from contaminants, for your family and loved ones!

It’s a fact that water is essential to our well being. Unfortunately, most of the drinking available for our consumption is really not safe. For example, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) sometime ago studied drinking water in the US and discovered that there are about 316 different contaminants in the nation’s drinking water!

Now, as much as that may sound unbelievable, the most saddening part is that, of these 316 contaminants only less than 40% have safety standards and are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This means over 60% of these contaminants are not regulated by our government agencies!

So, what does that mean? Simple. Government regulations and water treatment facilities are far behind when it comes to giving you clean, safe drinking water. This is the BIGGEST reason why you should get home water filtration systems for you and your family!

Having known that the water you’re using in your home right now may have several issues like mineral deposits (which cause water hardness); suspended dirt (which causes water turbidity) and others like bad tastes and smells from chlorine odor, the next question is..

Which Water Purification Systems Should You Buy?

As mentioned above there are over 316 different water contaminants that could be found in your drinking water, depending on your water source and the area you are based in.

Unfortunately, no one type of water filter will take care of all these contaminants. Therefore to know which home water purification systems to buy you first need to determine which contaminant(s) you are dealing with. This way you will be able to target the specific contaminants in your drinking water.

You can start by looking at the water report from your local city or Water Company. Getting a good diy water testing tool to test for which contaminant to remove can also help because simply going out there and buying any type of water filter will not protect you.  You need just the right one for your situation.

IMPORTANT: To ensure that you’re drinking the safest water possible, bottled water is never an alternative for several reasons among which are: (1) it is not regulated (2) it is expensive and (3) plastic waste is taxing on the environment!

It will interest you to know that the 2010 Presidents Cancer Panel Report recommends filtering home tap or well water to decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens. In the same vein, the Environmental Working Group’s February 2013 tap water report (referred to above) also recommends water filters for the cleanest possible water.

And so, once you have determined the problem with your drinking water your next move will be to decide on the type of water filter to use. But this is another area where many make mistakes, not because of any fault of their own, but because of the many options available.

Types of Water Purification Systems

If both the 2010 Presidents Cancer Panel Report and the Environmental Working Group’s February 2013 recommend water filters for guaranteed clean water then it stand to reason that you have some insight into the various water filters available out there, whether they be refrigerator water filters, whole house water filters, undersink water filters, faucet water filters etc.

1. Refrigerator Water Filters

Refrigerator water filters are presently household names when it comes to removing the most common water contaminants. In fact, refrigerators now come with built-in water filters and many people make it a requirement when buying refrigerators.

Here are a few handpicked refrigerator water filters from Amazon.com:

2. Whole House Water Filters

Now, though refrigerator water filters are very common it must be noted that they are basically filters for your drinking water. But we do know that the problem of water contamination is not just about your drinking water. You need a whole house water filtration system that can take care of the totality of water used in your home.

You must understand that most of the health hazards associated with unfiltered water can be linked to chlorine vapors and chloroform gas. For example, in the US reports from government agencies indicate a high measure of chloroform gas in most homes. This is as a result of chlorine used as disinfectant in municipal water supplies!

Unfortunately, chlorine, beyond acting as a disinfectant, can also interact with organic matter found in your water supply resulting in disinfection byproducts (DBPs) which have been scientifically proven to be far more toxic than chlorine itself!

And it will interest you to know that chlorine vapors, chloroform gases and DBPs are all linked to increased risk of asthma, skin irritation, cancer, weakening of your immune system, respiratory irritation, general fatigue, etc.

Of course, you know that water is essential for our daily living and that you need to take enough water if you must survive. This means the only way you can guide against these water-borne hazards is to get the right water filtration system. This why, as much as we encourage you to get a refrigerator water filter, it is also important that you have in place a high-quality whole house water filtration system. This is most important if your water is supplied from a Municipality.

Why a Whole House Water Filter is Important

A whole house water filtration system is important in your home because there are multiple sources from which chlorine vapors are released from unfiltered water into your home. Sources like dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, etc. All of these expose you and your family to dangerous chlorine vapors, chloroform gas, and disinfection byproducts (DBPs). And since it will not be practicable to install filters on these individual items, getting a whole house water filtration system is your best choice.

Whole house water filtration systems are also known as Point-of-Entry (POE) systems. They connect easily with your main water line allowing for all of the water used throughout your home to be treated. Whole house water filters help in filtering out the chlorine, chloramines, herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial solvents and many more chemicals in your water supply before it is pumped throughout your whole house.
