This Pentek EP-20BB carbon block filter cartridge reduces fine sediment and chlorine taste and odor in residential and commercial drinking water. It has a nominal (85%) filtration rating of 5 microns. The filter will reduce free available chlorine (FAC) at 2 parts per million (ppm) by at least 90% in up to 40,000 gallons at a flow rate of 4 gallons per minute (gpm). This cartridge is made of bonded powdered activated carbon (PAC) filter media wrapped in a polyolefin pre-filter with polyethylene outer netting. The nitrile butadiene rubber (Buna-N) gaskets seal the cartridge against the housing (sold separately). The cartridge has an initial pressure drop of 5.5 pounds per square inch (psi) at a flow rate of 5 gallons per minute (gpm), and operates over a temperature range of 40 to 180 degrees F (4.4 to 82.2 degrees C). This carbon block filter cartridge meets National Sanitation Foundation/American National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) standard 42 for quality assurance, and is used for purification of residential and commercial drinking water.

The nominal filtration rating is for a particle removal efficiency of 85%. Chlorine reduction capacity is the minimum total amount of water for which the free available chlorine (FAC) at a concentration of 2 ppm is reduced by at least 90%.

Water filters remove undesirable particles, chemicals, and microorganisms from water by means of a semipermeable barrier, adsorption, or biological processes. They are made of densely packed synthetic or natural fibers that trap suspended particles, materials that block microbes or adsorb unwanted chemicals, or substances that cause a chemical change, such as acid neutralization. For most residential, commercial, and industrial applications, water filters are manufactured in the form of replaceable cartridges that fit inside permanent housings. Filtration systems typically consist of a series of two or more types of filters, each designed to remove different contaminants. The performance of filters is measured by the minimum particle size that is blocked, the percentage of particles or microorganisms that are removed, the downstream concentration of unwanted chemicals, the maximum flow rate, and the amount of water that can be filtered before the filter must be replaced. Water filters are used in a wide range of applications, including drinking water purification, swimming pools, industrial processes, and irrigation, among others.

Pentair manufactures industrial, commercial, and residential water filtration components and systems. The company, founded in 1966 and headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards 9001 and 14001 for quality assurance.

I get municipal drinking water with 1-2ppm of of chlorine (as much as a public pool) and 22 grains of hardness (more than 2x what’s considered “extremely hard”). When I had a water softener installed in my house, I also had a

Great for whole-house applications: no pressure drop and protects softeners too

I have been using this filter with the Big Blue housing for years. I get clean & clear water at every point of use in my house. I find that the water tastes fine right out of the tap now, but ‘others’ in the house still prefer bottled. Note: in a blind taste test, they all chose the tap water! I use this ahead of my softener, and it strips out sediment & chlorine. The softener media has worked way beyond its suggested life span because of this filter.

We have a shallow spring fed well and use this filter in conjunction with a UV to clean our water.

There were many complaints that the Pentek EP-20BB Carbon Block Filter reduced system pressure by ~5 PSI. My pressure tank runs between 50 psi to 32 psi and to be honest I don’t notice the pressure drop at all. My well pump is rather quick and only takes ~30s to raise the pressure back to 50psi. I don’t know if that’s masking the filter concerns others had. Does a good job of removing SO2 smell from water.

Still great-tasting after 6 months!

Used this product in a Culligan HF-150A whole house housing – but used it undersink. The whole house filter cartridges are cheaper and filter much faster than the “under sink” marketed products. This filter worked great, fit in the housing, and makes the water taste almost as good as our rainwater system with a 4 stage + UV filtration system at a different house but for a lot less. We don’t do a separate sediment step, just this one. I’ll update review if filter doesn’t do well in the future.

Have two of these filters treating all the water in our home of 6 people – The filters get very “dirty” which we hope means the water is cleaner at the tap for drinking and for our water heater

I have had this filter for about 6 months, and it has performed very well. I never smell any chlorine, whereas without it, our city water has a very strong smell. It is easy to install, as well.
