This Pentek FloPlus-20BB carbon block filter cartridge reduces fine sediment, chlorine taste and odor, and protozoan cysts in residential drinking water. It has a nominal (85%) filtration rating of 0.5 micron, and 99.95% efficiency for the reduction of protozoan cysts. It will reduce free available chlorine (FAC) at 2 parts per million (ppm) by at least 90% in up to 50,000 gallons at a flow rate of 4 gallons per minute (gpm). This cartridge is made of modified bonded powdered activated carbon (PAC) filter media that provides efficient cyst reduction with a flow rate and dirt-holding capacity comparable to those of a 10-micron filter. The Santoprene (TPE, thermoplastic elastomer) gaskets seal the cartridge against the housing (sold separately). The cartridge has an initial pressure drop of 4 pounds per square inch (psi) at a flow rate of 4 gallons per minute (gpm), and operates over a temperature range of 40 to 180 degrees F (4.4 to 82.2 degrees C). This carbon block filter cartridge meets National Sanitation Foundation/American National Standards Institute (NSF/ANSI) standard 53 for quality assurance, and is used for purification of residential and commercial drinking water.

The nominal filtration rating is for a particle removal efficiency of 85%. Protozoan cysts include Giardia, Entamoeba, Cryptosporidium, and Toxoplasma. Chlorine reduction capacity is the minimum total amount of water for which the free available chlorine (FAC) at a concentration of 2 ppm is reduced by at least 90%.

Water filters remove undesirable particles, chemicals, and microorganisms from water by means of a semipermeable barrier, adsorption, or biological processes. They are made of densely packed synthetic or natural fibers that trap suspended particles, materials that block microbes or adsorb unwanted chemicals, or substances that cause a chemical change, such as acid neutralization. For most residential, commercial, and industrial applications, water filters are manufactured in the form of replaceable cartridges that fit inside permanent housings. Filtration systems typically consist of a series of two or more types of filters, each designed to remove different contaminants. The performance of filters is measured by the minimum particle size that is blocked, the percentage of particles or microorganisms that are removed, the downstream concentration of unwanted chemicals, the maximum flow rate, and the amount of water that can be filtered before the filter must be replaced. Water filters are used in a wide range of applications, including drinking water purification, swimming pools, industrial processes, and irrigation, among others.

Pentair manufactures industrial, commercial, and residential water filtration components and systems. The company, founded in 1966 and headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards 9001 and 14001 for quality assurance.

We have city water and wanted a whole house filtration option. We went with two filters, one pre-filter

Chlorine taste is gone and flow rate is good

We use this under the sink in a generic 10″ housing, where it filters 100% of the cold water coming through the main kitchen faucet. Virtually no loss in water pressure, and now we can fill a glass of water or coffee pot quickly and easily at the sink. After reading a lot of spec sheets, this appeared to be the filter that would give us the best water quality with the least pressure drop.

Works great – 6 months on city water with pre-filter

I live in a city with historically hard water and trouble chemicals in the water. When we purchased our house we installed a softener, but that still left us with skin irritation after long showers and having to use a filter pitcher for drinkable water. As we had to replace the whole water system in the house with a Pex water system when we purchased it, I knew the chemicals were not coming from the interior of the house.

I love it. Flow is great even with two showers …

Bought a new-to-us house about 4yrs ago and discovered that the house had no PRV or filter system, and I’m not a fan of unfiltered water at street pressure, so I put in a PRV with a single 4×20 filter housing. At first I put in a basic filter, 30 micron I think, and over 3yrs we didn’t experience much pressure drop. I realized that it wasn’t filtering anything, did some research, and ended up buying this filter (FloPlus-20BB).

Low flow restriction!

I’m impressed. I’ve got a little flojet 3.2 gal/m pumping up 8 feet and then through two pentek big blues, the second one holding this filter, the first a pentek 5 micron polyspun, then up another 4 feet through a portable propane hot water heater then through my shower Head! It’s like an expensive mineral water shower here in Alaska off grid! What a difference. No more funky plastic or chlorine smells from my water tank/ pex setup. Skin feels so much more relaxed. Drinking wise still a little metallicky? Maybe. That was only after 5 gallons through it. I honestly didn’t think I would get away with this. .5 microns congrats pentek. I put my drinking water through a berkey anyway after this system with an arsenic fluoride dumbdowner

Best filter

This is the best filter I have ever used. I bought it for my mothers home which uses well water. The smell of rotten eggs was so terrible, I could not even take a shower in the water. After installing the filter, the smell was completely gone. I could not believe the difference. The filter is expensive, but worth every penny. Also, I did not notice a drop in water pressure.

Make Sure To Use a sediment Prefilter

This unit traps the smallest of particles but does not seem to have a very large capacity for collected materials. Mine only lasted a few weeks while using a screen prefilter. It then drastically reduced my output PSI. I am going to add another big blue with a pleated sediment filter that will treat the water flowing into this filter. That will increase the life of this filter but by how much? I will update my review once I find out.

Like it.

Bought the first filter lasted about eight months, I noticed the house water flow is slower, bought a new filter to replace the old one water flow back to normal. Like it.

Works As Intended

Even though I get a pressure drop of 5 psi at a flow rate of 4 gpm that is still better than the competitors product. Not bad for a filter with a 0.5 micron rating
